Not Every No Is Rejection

I got a “no” this week on a speaking opportunity I really wanted.
Not because it wasn’t a fit. Not because they didn’t see the value. It came down to budget. And if I’m being honest, that one stung a little. It was a place I was excited to go, people I genuinely wanted to be around, and a room I knew I could serve well.
But it reminded me of something I think we all need to hear from time to time…not every “no” is rejection. Sometimes it’s just misalignment.
Earlier in my career, I would’ve found a way to make it work. I would’ve lowered the price, adjusted the scope, and told myself that getting the opportunity mattered more than honoring the value. And maybe in the short term, that feels like a win. But over time, it teaches people to expect less from you…and worse, you start expecting less from yourself.
This time, I didn’t chase it. I didn’t force it. I stayed grounded in what I know I bring and trusted that the right opportunities won’t require me to become less just to fit.
There will be other rooms, other stages, other opportunities. And when they come, they won’t feel forced…they’ll feel right.
If you’re in a season where things aren’t landing the way you hoped, don’t rush to question your worth. Sometimes the only thing missing isn’t talent or effort…it’s alignment.
